The Heat is On...

Kelly Woolfe

Summer is here! The kids are home, we're settling in, and I don't know about you, but I thought summer was supposed to be relaxing! Am I right? Lazy days at the pool, picnics at the park, movie nights whenever we feel like it... Well, this summer is kicking my booty! It is busy busy BUSY and the relaxing time -- the hang with my kiddos, stay in our jammies, be slightly lazy time -- well, its just not happening. Honestly, busy is good, and its been FUN, but I guess I'm still trying to find MY balance in summer. Summer is about spending time with my kids and remembering to enjoy each and every little moment with them because we all know it goes too fast. Its about letting them do the fun summer things they want to do like art, basketball, tennis and soccer camps, taking them to the pool as much as we possibly can, and just ENJOYING one another. So finding that ME time has been a little trickier, and I'm still figuring it out! You know, that time for work and my workouts --- as well as the regular everyday mom stuff -- errands, cleaning, cooking, laundry -- you know the drill. As I was telling my good friend the other day, "Life doesn't stop just because its summer. But, apparently, it does." Can anyone else relate?

So, staying SANE in summer means that I DO have to find the balance and find that time just for ME. It means that skipping my workouts is NOT an option because that is the ONE thing I can do just for me each day that makes me feel good and makes me a better mom for my kids. Yes, it can be harder when all the kids are home, but we are finding ways to make it work!

Here are a few tips for making YOUR summer workouts happen, even with all of the kids home!

  • Focused workouts. Instead of longer workouts, aim for shorter, more intense workouts. They are super effective AND your kids can probably handle you working out for a shorter duration!

  • Block it out. Put your workout on your schedule. Treat it like an appointment you can't miss.

  • Make a plan. Once you've penciled in your workout, make a plan for what your daily workouts will be. Its one thing to find the motivation to workout. Its another to figure out what to do for your workout. If I know exactly what I am doing before I go to bed the night before, I am sure to make it happen that next morning.

  • Make the park your bootcamp. The kids can play and have fun and you can get in your workout. Its a win-win! Check out this quick, no equipment workout, above, that you can do while your kiddos play.

  • If you can't beat 'em, let 'em join you! Oh ya, my kids workout with me! We make it fun, have some laughs, and the memories are priceless. Love that we can all do something good for US together! (And, everything is more fun with a workout buddy!)

Hope you find YOUR balance in summer and carve out that important time just for you. If you have questions about HOW to make fitness and health work for you this summer, please feel free to get in touch! I'd love to meet you and talk with you more about your goals!
